Making a Difference

Experiences with a difference

Have you ever imagined sleeping out under the stars, using a compass, or going for a bush walk? These are just some of the experiences that students may have on a school camp. Outdoor education programs can be life-changing for young people, allowing them to develop their decision-making skills, confidence, and ability to work with others.

By participating in outdoor activities, students can also learn about social and environment responsibility, communal living, while improving their mental health and wellbeing.

A career in the outdoor education sector is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of young Australians, as Outdoor Educators help bridge the gap between young people and the natural world.

From crossing valleys and mountains to navigating rivers and bushland, Outdoor Educators play a critical role in shaping the future of our youth.

The Alice Sloan Expedition Program Evaluation

Victoria University completed an evaluation of the effectiveness of The Outdoor Education Foundation’s and the Alice Sloan Trust’s, Expedition program. It examined if it has had an impact on the participants’ lives beyond the expedition.

With 14 years of data, the evaluation concluded the program fosters a sense of empowerment, leadership and community among the girls; it also led to increased self-esteem, resilience, awareness, empathy, and a strong sense of unity and identity among participants.

“Though challenging physically and mentally, camp allows appreciation and gratitude for everyday life. It also expands your comfort zone, leaving pleasure behind to grow as a person.”
